Being diagnosed with HIV is devastating. 

​

But it is not the end of the world.

​

HIV positive individuals today can have the same length and quality of life as those who are HIV-negative in similar conditions.



 

However, to be able to live a long and healthy life, HIV positive individuals need the following:
 

a) Uninterrupted access to antiretroviral medications (ART) and taking those medicines without fail.

b) Monitoring to check the medicines are working, using viral load tests

c) A baseline drug resistance genotyping test to detect the presence of resistance- this test finds out which medications will and will not work against the HIV strains inside a single infected person.

And of course,

Lots of social support- a caring family, circle of friends and a healthcare team.
